Tips for a Healthy Holiday Smile

Posted .

“Wrap presents. Cook food. Go to 7 holiday parties, take family photos, send cards…” The holiday season is hectic.  Don’t add “get a cavity” to your list! Now is more a important time than ever to have excellent oral hygiene. Do the little things everyday to help keep your mouth healthy and bright.

The first thing to remember is to brush your teeth. This should take 2 minutes, twice a day. Use short, tooth-wide strokes and gentle pressure, to make sure you get a good clean without scraping up enamel or gum tissue.

Brushing’s life-long companion is flossing. When teeth are properly flossed, food particles and plaque that your toothbrush cannot reach are completely removed. Flossing should only take 2-3 minutes each day and can be completed either before or after brushing. Use only ADA-approved products specifically intended for interdental cleaning.

Sugary and acidic foods both damage your teeth. This means more than just candy–in fact, many drinks are full of both acids and sugars. Acid and sugary drinks include soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit juice, wine, and most coffee beverages. The acids and sugars present in these drinks, along with other foods, contributes to tooth enamel decay and cavities.
